Cranmer did not recant his recidivism out of guilt; his hypocrisy didn’t save him from execution, and it was sheer bloody-mindedness that led to his recantation. Cranmer of course was not a man much given to treating oaths seriously: he took a vow of celibacy when ordained and yet married twice (carrying his second wife around in a box on the back of his carriage!), took an oath of loyalty to the Pope when consecrated Archbishop of Canterbury (which he immediately also recanted after assuming his seat), and betrayed Ann Boleyn his patroness, by adjudging her a witch and annulling Henry’s marriage to her, so that she was beheaded, doing once more (as always) the king’s bidding. He was a thoroughly ambitious, unprincipled, and reprehensible creature, who would do anything to get ahead!
